I am currently the art director for The New York Times’s “Inside the Times” section that appears on pages 2 and 3 of the newspaper every day.

From 2015 to 2023, I was the Illustrations Editor for Narratively.

Times Insider

Every day, Times Insider provides a behind-the-scenes look at how things work across The New York Times.

An interview with a Times reporter on their beat, a collection of favorite Super Bowl foods, a reflection on death and grief, a look through the NYT archives... a Times Insider can come from anywhere!

Each entry in this column traces the evolution of the meaning and usage of one word throughout the history of The New York Times.

Second Look

Second Look is a weekly, print-only feature that asks illustrators (and readers) to take a “second look” at a story or topic from the previous week’s news.

Newspaper Spots

Each month, one artist provides a spot illustration every day for the top of page 3. That’s 365 spots per year by 12 different artists!

The months are often themed, but the only real stipulation is that each illustration contains a newspaper (or a reference to one).

You can read a Times Insider I wrote about these spots and an interview with Sophy Hollington about her series here!

Facts of the Year

On New Year’s Day Inside the Times publishes a selection of the facts that appear daily on page 3, from throughout the previous year.

This gets its own nice, big layout, and its own nice, big newspaper spots!

Sketchbook

Notable for it’s brief text and horizontal orientation, Sketchbook was the progenitor of Second Look, and a similar illustration-driven feature that responded to current events every weekend.

From 2015 to 2023, I commissioned hundreds of illustrations as the Illustrations Editor for Narratively’s longform nonfiction stories. Narratively’s stories could be scandalous, confessional, historical, peculiar, heartbreaking— lots for an illustrator to work with.
